Benoît Broisat

“I have always worked with images and descriptions and I’ve never thought that their function was to reproduce a preexisting reality. Rather, images and descriptions interest me in the first place for their creative function. This paradoxal quality leads me to work with the way in which testimony invents the event it documents, in which the story constructs the space that it claims to describe, in which our own memory, instead of retrieving moments from the past, articulates its own contours, its own landscapes.”

Born in 1980 in Bonneville, France, Benoit Broisat lives and works in Paris.

His work has been exhibited in the Musée d’art moderne de la ville de Paris, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, the 9th Lyon bienniale, the Serpentine Gallery, London, the Galerie nationale du Jeu de paume, Paris, the CaixaForum, Barcelona and the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo.
